Director Horizon (top centre)
The Smiths Director Horizon provided thoroughly modern information, but presented it in a way that now seems old-fashioned. Instead of a ball-like indicator, showing both roll and pitch, it used a separate indicator for each. The horizon line showed only roll, and an aircraft symbol moved vertically for pitch. Smaller markers indicated deviation from auto-pilot settings. As far as I can see, there is no way to represent this gauge in X-Plane version 8, so I've taken a stock gauge and merely made it look similar to the real thing. X-Plane 9 introduces the concept of Generic Instruments, where any dataref can be assigned to a needle. I've successfully created a director horizon that works properly for v9.

Beam Compass (bottom centre)
The Beam Compass is like a modern horizontal situation indicator. Again, the Smiths instrument did not work quite like current ones. The needle swung with changes of course, not the compass rose. Again, for X-Plane 8 it will look like the original Smiths gauge, but work like a modern H.S.I.
