| Wings (2/2) |
|---|
The main landing gear folds into the wing, which is too thin to accommodate the whole four-wheel truck, so a bulging “D-Door” was used as a closure panel. The flat doors in X-Plane were hopeless for this, and it looked very odd for the wheels to “submerge” into the wing and not a proper wheel-well recess. A 3D object file allowed the wells to have depth, and the doors to have thickness and shape.
Speed Brakes
The standard axes of rotation were another headache for speed brakes. Again, an object file allowed the axes to be correct, for the brakes to have thickness, and to fit a proper recess in the wing.
Other Advantages
Modelling the wing as a 3D object gave other advantages too. It was easier to integrate the wing to the nacelles, to add detail like fences and spoilers to the leading edge, to shape the pinion tanks and winglet correctly with their own fuel vent pipes and skid block, and also to add another vent pipe on the wing tip.
