Engine Nacelles (2/3)
... Back
With X-Plane 8.40, the entire nacelle and wing root assembly have been created using an object file. The nacelles have the correct shape, and have been merged with the wing root to form a continuous smooth skin. To reduce processing overheads, a great deal of effort has been taken to reduce unnecessary polygons.
A second file has been created with internal detail for the nacelles: Rolls-Royce Avon 524 engines have been modelled with dimensions taken from a display engine at Brooklands Museum, and the compressor and turbines are visible through the intakes and along exhaust jet pipe extensions.
The illustrations show:
(Top): Two rectifier cooling outlets near the front of the nacelle, four jet pipe ventilation and cooling intakes about half way along the nacelles, and a large reverse-thrust outlets for the outer engines.
(Middle): R-R Avon engines, jet pipe extensions and silencers.
(Bottom): A view of the intakes and compressors, the smaller, central intake being for the cabin heating, ventilation and air-conditioning heat-exchangers and generator/rectifier cooling. Underneath the intakes are NACA ducts for cooling around the engines and wing spar.
